A Beer Lover’s Guide to West Palm Beach (and Beyond)

A Beer Lover's (8)

Yes, I did go to every single one of these breweries to write this article. Best. Job. Ever.

Steam Horse Brewing

This brand new brewery in the Warehouse District of West Palm Beach is sure to be your next favorite hangout. The industrial design inside makes you feel like you are in the Northeast, but the brews make you feel right at home using local ingredients to make some serious flavor profiles. The bartenders are some of the best in the business, and this location opens at 1pm for all of my fellow day-drinkers. Grab a bite to eat at Grandview Public Market then walk over one block to this soon to be legendary establishment.

Beers to try:

Boozy Berry – this wheat ale grants you all of your summer berry wishes with a crisp finish and light body

Due South Brewing

Hidden in the same neighborhood as Copperpoint Brewing Co., this established brewery is more casual and industrial than warm and homey like its counterpart. They have doubled their space in the past year to now include an air conditioned taproom, patio, and cornhole among other games. The staff is friendly, down to Earth, and their happy hour $4 pints are hard to beat. These people know how to brew some seriously delicious beer, focusing more on flavor than flamboyance.

Beers to try:

Caramel Cream Ale – my favorite beer that I have had in a long time, perfect equal parts sweet and robust. Tastes slightly like a rice krispy treat, and that is fine with me.

Honey Vanilla Wheat – A more flavorful version of a Pale Ale, this beer goes down smooth and silky with a moderate 4.3% ABV

Coastline – the pride and joy lager of Due South for good reason, this crisp clean beer is refreshing on a hot summer day and pairs well with any outdoor lounging

Category 5 IPA – This imperial IPA has got some serious kickass hoppiness, obviously, but is still pleasant to drink and has the perfect 8.5% ABV

West Palm Brewery & Wine Vault

Situated in the perfect corner right off of Clematis street, this brand new brewery is already full of people on weekdays and weekends. There are even early bird food specials including wood fired pizza made right in front of you. The bartenders are kind and the beer is delicious and flavorful, and will satisfy both the beet connoisseur and the happy hour drinker. Try the seasonal saison and you just might get some free swag.

Beers to try:

Evernia saison– This seasonal saison is equal parts fruity and strong, with an 8.2% ABV its one of the best values for your money

Wild Summer Nights– This wheat ale is all of your summer dreams rolled into one crisp light beer

Passionfruit Wheat – This wheat ale made all of my friends jealous that they didn’t order it, it was the most refreshing beer I have had all summer

Palm Beach Porter – The perfect dark beer for a South Florida day or night

Mathews Brewing

The only brewery located in Lake Worth, Mathews Brewing has brought a new level of professional brewing to an otherwise forgotten neighborhood. The decor is clean and crisp, and there is a fantastic courtyard area that houses food trucks and concerts every night on weekends. This is a local hotspot for happy hour with generous pours for only $4 for 12-16oz.

Beers to try:

Florida Haze – This New England IPA is as hazy as it is hoppy. It has a citrus kick and a generous 7.2%ABV.

Sweet Emotion – I’ve been digging the cream ales lately and this beer is no exception. It has a hint of vanilla and cream soda with all the robustness of a great ale.

White Goblin – The perfect mild brew for someone who likes lower IBUs without compromising flavor.

Junkyard Dog – This English Brown Ale has all of the warmth of a winter classic with the brightness of a summertime ale. In other words, perfect for all seasons.

Copperpoint Brewing Co.

This hidden gem in the warehouse area right in Boynton Beach has a rustic and homey feel with some serious brewing potential. Copperpoint doesn’t sell food, but you can come on different nights of the week to experience the food truck of the day outside. Tour the brewhouse or enjoy a summer evening on the patio. This is the perfect place for any type of get together, and with the low lighting and great brews, it can even be the perfect date spot.

Beers to try:

One love – this IPA would make Bob Marley proud, hoppy and refreshing with a hint of fruitiness

Witness – this Belgian wit has got a little bit of a citrus bite and is perfect for light beer lovers

Copperpoint lager – this amber lager is the brewery’s signature brew with a crip clean finish and a color that warrant the name

Trula saison – this saison is a bit different because its crisp and clear but with the signature citrus taste of a summertime saison

Twisted Trunk Brewing

This place is an after work happy hour favorite for residents of North Palm Beach and Singer Island. Enjoy seasonal brews, outdoor seating, and beat your friends in a game of cornhole. The green lit brewing equipment and raw wood make this place worthy of its name. On Sunday mornings they have free yoga, and if you make it through the class you get a free beer (AKA the ultimate Sunday).

Beers to try:

Rojo Fresa – for the fruit lovers, this tangy flavorful ale has some serious punch to it

Rasta Stout – for Guinness fans who crave more of a bite, this espresso flavored nitro stout will make you dream of heavy winter brews even in the summer

Watermelon Saison – for the not-yet-grown-up grown ups who dream of summer all year round

Bro – for all my IPA buffs, this double IPA is equal parts citrusy and hoppy

Saltwater Brewery

This Del Ray brewery is housed in an old barn-like warehouse adjacent to the train tracks on Atlantic Ave. The theme here, unsurprisingly, is all things saltwater: swimming, fishing, and of course… drinking. With an impressive brewing space and large outdoor patio, it is the perfect place to spend a Saturday. Don’t let the surfer vibe fool you, these people are serious about beer, and they’ve gotten it right considering they have been doing it for almost 70 years and were one of the first breweries in Palm Beach County

Beers to try:

Screamin Reels IPA –  A favorite of the bartenders and weekly bargoers, this IPA has an impressive 7%ABV without compromising on taste

Wetsuit – This Belgian pale ale actually has a darker shade and smoother finish making it easy to sip (or gulp)

The Sunburnt Monk – All of the flavor and smoothness of a red ale with the ABV of an imperial IPA, what’s not to love?

Bone-a-fide Blonde – Probably the easiest beer to drink on a hot summer day, you’ll forget its not water because you’ll feel like its hydrating you its so crisp and clean

NOBO Brewing

This hidden gem is a place for locals and those who want a home brewing experience. The taproom is no bigger than a typical bedroom but the brews are well worth the short trip around the corner from both Due South and Copperpoint. This is the type of place where you get to know your bartender well and invite them to your kid’s 5th birthday party. The beers were full of great flavors and you could tell some heart and soul went into the brewing process.

Beers to try:

Sai(son) It With Flowers – This pink colored saison had the perfect balance between fruity and sweet with the right amount of hops

French Vanilla Coffee Pot Porter – Perfect for those who are able to drink an espresso no problem

Milkshake Your Money Maker – As the name suggests, this brew is more of a dessert than a drink, and it’s absolutely delicious.

Barrel of Monks

This opulent seemingly out of place taproom in the middle of Boca’s business district has a serious fetish for Belgian beer. In fact, that’s all they produce. The paraphernalia all over makes you feel transported to Europe. With all that concentration on one subset of beer, they have really honed their skills and produced a few great brews. The taproom hosts fun events throughout the month including throwdowns with other breweries and beer pong tournaments.

Beers to try:

Nuance – Both Alan and I got this instant classic saison which will please hefeweizen lovers who don’t like to go to fruity

Blood Orange Gose – This is a flavor punch in the face with a hint of sea salt, just enough to intrigue your senses

Single in Havana – Made with guava, this was probably my favorite beer I have drank all month, equal parts hoppy and sweet

Wizard – This classic witbier has a super low IBU making it the perfect summertime brew
